Mark Metry: Screw Being Shy!
Mark Metry, inspirational author and podcast host, shares his insights on this week’s episode of INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE. He’s returning the favor, or perhaps doubling it, after having me on his Humans 2.0 podcast last year.
Like many of our recent guests, Mark is supposed to be on a book tour right now. His book, “Screw Being Shy: Learn How to Manage Social Anxiety and Be Yourself in Front of Anyone” was released March 8, just as the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the world.
But his message of overcoming social anxiety is too important to be delayed, especially as mental health issues are exacerbated by self-isolation and social distancing. I really respect Mark for not just working to get himself out of his own depression, but also doing the work to understand the scientific basis and then writing the book. Sharing his story will undoubtedly save lives.
“I didn’t want to write a book that just talked about my story and anecdotally told people ‘hey, here’s what you can do,’” says Mark. “I really wanted to back it up by science and to show that there are these real, verifiable, credible ways done through peer reviewed clinical studies.”
As with another recent guest on INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE, Dr. Jud Brewer, Mark bring science into the discussion of issues that affect us all but have become dominated by hype and celebrity quick fixes. Though he’s young, his insight and research is invaluable.
It really amazes me that Mark already has so much perspective on current events. He had a message ready for his book tour, but already has been thinking and speaking about how the pandemic and recent protests have caused him to learn and craft new talking points. It sounds to me like he’s well on his way to his next book idea!
As I discussed in last week’s episode of INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE with Stephon Alexander, finding a balance of creative and academic pursuits is a key step towards many people’s mental well-being. Mark refers to these as “seasons,” and says he relies on his core values as he cycles through. He describes his focus as “tripling down” on a project.
Mark admits that his motivation to start the Humans 2.0 podcast was a selfish one — wanting to learn from the best. I feel similarly about INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE which allows me, as the host, to have fascinating discussions with some of the greatest minds in the world.
“I was just running into a ton of issues, a ton of problems I didn’t have solutions for,” says Mark, speaking to his inspiration to start the podcast. “And so for me, I was like how can I create a system to put myself in where I’m just constantly learning from the world’s best of the best?”
Thanks again to Mark for being on the show. I wish him continued success and inspiration.
Perhaps you noticed that I’ve switched up the format a bit, with opening and closing questions that I plan to ask all guests going forward. I hope you enjoy them. I’d love to hear answers from all of you, please comment here and on YouTube!
